Insomnia Treatments
Insomnia typically comes under 3 categories, difficulty falling asleep, waking in the night, or early final wakening. Patients may have all or a combination of these however one will usually be more prominent.
To treat this people often avoid stimulants or try CBT and will get varying levels of results. Sometimes sleeping tablets (hypnotics) are prescribed and although these help to go to sleep they don’t remove the underlying cause, and they are typically only suitable for short term use.
Studies have shown that acupuncture can be more effective in treating insomnia than hypnotics. Acupuncture is believed to help by increasing blood flow to the brain, regulating regular brain tissue activity, relaxing the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight) as well as regulating several neurotransmitters and hormones which are related to sleep and sleep cycles.
Acupuncture and Chinese medicine as a whole has been used for thousands of years to treat this condition and to this day it is used all over the world helping millions world wide.
