Acupuncture Treatments for IBS

Irritable Bowl Syndrome Relief

IBS is the most common digestive disorder, affecting almost 1 in 4 of us in the UK! It’s a functional disorder of the intestines and has several possible symptoms, including chronic pain, bloating, flatulence and altered bowel habits.

The pain and other impairments from IBS can lead to frequent doctor visits and workplace absenteeism as it can be a very debilitating condition. We find that the majority of clients that suffer from IBS often struggle with either stress, anxiety or depression. This leads them to be in a state of ‘fight or flight’ where the body prioritises blood into the limbs and brain, and not our digestive organs.

So to tackle this we use acupuncture, give you acupressure and breathing exercises to do at home as well as work with you to find and change any possible lifestyle factors that are triggering or worsening the bouts of IBS.

Acupuncture can relieve the pain of IBS, Improve the motility of the digestive tract, put us in a state of ‘rest and digest’ instead of the ‘fight or flight’ response which we so often go to in our busy modern lives. We also use acupuncture to reduce the anxiety and depression many people suffer with that can be the cause of their IBS or a result of them having IBS.

As of the 7th of April 2021, the National institute of care and excellence (NICE guidelines) recommend acupuncture as a solution to both primary and secondary chronic pain, including IBS pain. So you can feel confident in the effectiveness of this treatment option.
